Reduce

At ILIP, we work incessantly, day after day, to reduce plastic consumption by reducing the thickness and weight of our packaging solutions without detracting from their performance. Besides combating the waste of raw materials, we also undertake to reduce food waste by designing solutions that prolong the shelf life of foods.

DOWNGAUGING

Reducing for the eco-design is something that ILIP has been pursuing for a decade with its Fit4Purpose approach to packaging. Reducing the weight of the packaging (DOWNGAUGING), without compromising its intended purpose, safety and convenience for the consumer and the hygiene and shelf life of packaged foods, is sustainable from an environmental and economic point of view. The graph below demonstrates the constant reduction in the average weight of punnets and trays for fresh produce, which ILIP has continued since 2010: average weight reduction -16.61% equal to -5t of savings in raw materials (PET, r-PET , PP) (2023 vs 2010). Besides the downgauging, now in its sustainability strategy ILIP is focusing more on eco-design to encourage complete closed-cycle recyclability and product certifications according to the program for type III environmental declarations. See the recycling section.

Sustainable package is “Fit4Purpose”

More freshness, less waste

The environmental impact of packaging can only be assessed in relation to the product it contains and the function it serves. This is why a balance must be sought between “underpackaging” and “overpackaging”: efficient packaging protects food products in an optimal manner, extending their shelf life and minimising both food waste and environmental impact. Ilip supports scientific research on the role played by packaging in food preservation with the aim to reduce food waste.

We were the first manufacturer of thermoformed plastic packaging to adhere to and support the Save Food initiative.
